Intellectual Property and Data Privacy Article Published in Insurance Day

Information security and data privacy is something that is still very much maturing. In some senses we are playing catch-up with the ingenuity of hackers to exploit the weaknesses that exist in current systems. Writing for Insurance Day recently, I asked: "In this increasingly technological business environment, where intellectual property is created, shared, stored and utilised almost entirely digitally, how should firms go about maximizing the ability to create, leverage and protect their intellectual property?"

The first step I always recommend to people asking this question is to understand your assets, their value to you and their value to others. This is a critical part of being able to ensure that your organisation is protecting itself. Not so very long ago, when I spoke about assets to a company, they would be considering physical items (the building they owned, for example.) Thankfully most organisations now understand that their digital assets and intellectual property require the same level of protection and the same thought processes.
